 THE 2021 MGA KWENTONG KLIMA-LIKASAN TUNGO SA KATATAGAN: CLIMATE AND DISASTER RESILIENCE AWARDS FIRST PLACE WINNER

“WOMEN LEADERSHIP, TRAILBLAZERS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY”

Thirty years after the infamous Mt. Pinatubo eruption, various social and economic structures and environmental conditions of Botolan are again thriving efficiently towards sustainable development. Several programs have been initiated in order to achieve environmental sustainability such as:

• Fabrication and Installation of Artificial Reef with Coral Transplantation

• Botolan initiated an installation of artificial reefs (AR) in 8 coastal barangays since 2008 to improve fish production.

• Mangrove and Forest Reforestation

• For several years, the LGU-Botolan supports the mangrove and forest planting activities as well as urban greening

• Solid Waste Management

• LGU-Botolan has enacted a resolution regulating the use of plastics and styrofoams in the municipality. Aside from this, they also implemented the “Basura Mo, Palit Mo” program wherein a one (1) kilo of plastic wastes can be exchanged with one (1) kilo of rice.

• Trash-to-Art Contest: Turn your Trash into Art

• Due to the home quarantine imposed on 2020, the LGU-Botolan challenged its constituents to bring out their creative ideas on how to make household waste into something that is valuable and artistic.

The Municipality of Botolan proved that women empowerment is essential, not only in their own families, but also in the community for socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. Mayor Doris E. Maniquiz, a three-termer Municipal Mayor of Botolan, Vice Mayor Doris D. Ladines, two-termer Vice Mayor, Rosario C. Aguilar, a six-year Municipal Administrator, are the empowered women behind these programs; to blaze the trail and to leave a path for others to follow.
