Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reduction: Zamboanga City Initiatives For Climate Change Mitigation

The City of Zamboanga is one of the model cities which integrated the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions as a component for their Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP). The LCCAP, supplemented with the GHG Management Plan, is a key document to guide the GHG reduction strategies and implementation of programs of the city LGU for the present and coming years.
With the assistance from U.S. Agency for International Development Strengthening Urban Resilience for Growth with Equity (USAID SURGE) Project, the city was able to undertake GHG inventory that was later used to craft their GHG Management Plan. Their targets include the reduction of fossil fuel and electricity consumption in their Local Government Unit (LGU) offices. These were achieved through the strict implementation of policies on vehicles, as well as their maintenance, utilization of paperless communication, and minimized use of electricity and use of energy-efficient appliances and equipment.
The same practices are being duplicated at the community level together with other climate change mitigation measures such as waste-to-value efforts, establishment of Material Recovery Facility, development of the Zamboanga City Water Front and heritage walk development which has been inaugurated this year as part of the Green, Green, Green Program, construction of climate resilient buildings, and the conduct of rehabilitation, reforestation, and enhancement projects in the city’s watershed and central district mangrove forest areas.
Through these efforts, the Local Government of Zamboanga City hopes to mitigate and reduce the effects of climate change in addition to helping its citizens to cope up with the pandemic.

Si Bienvenido “Benjo” Cruz Jr. ay ang Pinuno ng Tanggapan ng Kasaysayan, Pamana, Sining, Kultura at Turismo ng dakilang Bayan ng Bulakan. Nakamulatan ni Benjo ang kalinisan ng kailugan sa Bulakan. Ngunit sa paglipas ng panahon at pagdami ng populasyon, hindi maiiwasan ang pagdami ng mga basura at kawalan ng disiplina ng iilang mga kababayan.
Kasama ang iba't ibang sektor sa kanilang komunidad, tinukoy nila ang mga istruktura na kailangang ipagawa at ayusin, mga lugar na tambakan ng basura na kailangang linisin mga kanal, patubigan at kailugan na kailangan alagaan at mahalin. Dito nagsimula at nabuo ang isang programa na tinawag na “VolunTourism” na naglalayon na hikayatin ang kapwa niyang Bulakenyo na makiisa at makibahagi sa kanilang iba't-ibang mga makakalikasang programa katulad ng patuloy na paglilinis ng kapaligiran at kailugan.
Naniniwala si Benjo na ang paglilinis na ginagawang ito sa kailugan na nasasakupan ng kabayanan ay simula pa lamang ng isang mas malaking proyekto na magdadala ng maraming turista at paglago ng turismo.
