The Department of Environment and Natural Resources announces the Top 3 winners, and 7 Special Citation Award winners of this year’s Mga Kwentong KLIMA-likasan Tungo sa Katatagan: A Climate and Disaster Resiliency Recognition Awards.
   
Mga Kwentong KLIMA-likasan Tungo sa Katatagan: A Climate and Disaster Resiliency Recognition Awards
 
 
Annadine Marzineres of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Botolan, Zambales won the First Place of the Recognition Awards with her entry entitled “Women Leadership, Trailblazers of Environmental Sustainability”.
 
In her entry, Marzineres boasts the different programs and projects initiated by LGU-Botolan in achieving environmental sustainability in their municipality such as Fabrication and Installation of Artificial Reef with Coral Transplantation, Mangrove and Forest Reforestation, Solid Waste Management, and Trash-to-Art Contest: Turn your Trash into Art among others.
 
Meanwhile, Engr. Reynaldo Gonzales of the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources-Zamboanga City, bags the Second Place award.
 
Engr. Gonzales exhibits in his entry, “Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction: Zamboanga City Initiatives for Climate Change Mitigation”, the City of Zamboanga as one of the model cities which integrated the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions as a component for their Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP). Various strategies and programs serve as guides in the GHG reduction of the city LGU for the present and coming years. These include utilization of paperless communication, and minimized use of electricity and use of energy-efficient appliances and equipment in the LGU offices, while duplicating same practices such as waste-to-value efforts, establishment of Material Recovery Facility Green, Green, Green Program at the community level.
 
Maria Clarita Limbaro, from the LGU of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur, secured the third place award with her entry entitled “Sagip-Wakatan Program: Kwentong KLIMA-likasan ng Bayabas, Surigao del Sur”.
 
The Sagip-Wakatan Program is an annual mangrove reforestation, replanting & coastal cleanup initiative of LGU-Bayabas aims to maintain and improve the mangrove cover density to help protect the community against destructive effects of storm surges, tidal waves, tsunami, and soil erosion. This conservation program involves the participation of different sectors like fisher folks, women, youth, religious groups, volunteer groups (SERTSS, BHWS, TANOD, Day Care Workers, Bantay- Dagat), 4Ps Parent Leaders, LGU workers and National Agency personnel.
 
The Department also awards seven (7) Special Citations.
 
Entries this year were evaluated based on their Climate and Disaster Resiliency content (60 percent); visual appeal of the photographs and video (30 percent); and, the geographical reach of the initiative (10 percent).
 
The judges for this year’s Resiliency Awards were Commissioner Rachel Herrera of the Climate Change Commission, Director Tecson Lim of the Department of National Defense-Office of Civil Defense, and Dr. Mahar Lagmay, the Executive Director of the University of the Philippines Resilience Institute.
 
Mga Kwentong KLIMA-likasan Tungo sa Katatagan: A Climate and Disaster Resiliency Recognition Awards, which is in support to the Global Good Stories Movement, seeks to recognize the stories of individuals, both women and men, and groups on the impacts of climate change and disasters in their communities, and on how they are addressing them through pursuing relevant programs on environmental protection and conservation, climate change, and disaster risk reduction.
 
The Global Good Stories Movement is a movement of people who share the common belief that “we can change the story of the world by changing the storyline.”
 
Open to all Filipinos and communities coming from any region of the Philippines, the submission of entries for the recognition awards was held from March 16, 2021 to May 21, 2021.
 
The awarding ceremony of the event was held via the virtual platform, Zoom, on July 2, 2021, as part of the celebration of the National Disaster Resilience Month.
